While There is Time

One of our group left a passport behind (not sure how that happens!), so I have a bit more time. Today is our 400 mile drive to Belgium, and the ‘Battle of the Bulge’.

The two medics. They were airdropped (paratroopers) into Normandy and landed, amid heavy enemy fire, miles away from Ste. Mere Eglese. They gathered up 76 of their own wounded, along with four civilians, and took cover in the beautiful, small church nearby. There, they held off the Germans trying to kill them. At one point, a mortar shell fell through the church steeple, hit the ground, but did not decimate. One of the two men, I forget which one, picked it up and threw it out a window. The blood of the mortally wounded stains the pews where they breathed their last breath, but they died in the presence of their comrades, who would not leave them behind. To this day, the church remains intact and is tenderly cared for by the precious woman who lives across the road.

The two medics. Heroes to many.

Faithful caretaker who remembers D Day very well, and those who fought to secure her freedomπŸ™πŸ‡«πŸ‡·.
